The six day training course for emotional literacy support assistants began in January 2012. Since then there have been a further three courses and we are about to begin our fifth cohort this January 2013. We will then have 95 specially trained teaching assistants working to support the emotional well-being of the pupils in Cardiff schools. We are also looking to offer additional training opportunities in the importance of attachment and in basic counselling skills.
Evaluation from the training has been consistently positive and there is great feedback from schools.
We offer regular supervision sessions in groups of up to ten and this enables great collaborative support to develop the ELSA role further.
We are committed to this initiative and look forward to continue the training and supervision until all schools are able to benefit from having an ELSA.
