The Educational Psychology Service in the London Borough of Merton began their programme of ELSA training in the Autumn Term 2010.The programme now comprises 6 days of training followed by supervision in small groups each half term. Term. Accreditation as an ELSA will depend on full attendance during the course and participation in on-going casework supervision with an educational psychologist. The topics that are covered over the 6 days include:

Emotional literacy

Self esteem

Active listening and communication skills

Anger management

Social skills training (including working with puppets)

An introduction to Autism

Friendship skills

Therapeutic stories

Loss and bereavement

Supporting children through family break-up

Good practice guidelines

There are 72 ELSAs working in schools in Merton, with 20 starting training in September 2015. Feedback from ELSAs, schools and parents has been overwhelmingly positive and the Educational Psychology Service are committed to supporting the ELSAs with training, supervision and the development of resourcees.

We host an annual Resource Fayre. ELSAs bring along favourite resources which have proved particularly useful in their work. This is an opportunity to share experiences and ideas with their colleagues.
